It's a new year and sh*t...

Things that we have learned in ‘09 that we will take into ‘10:

Eysqueen
Ultimately, the only one responsible for and has the power over your own happiness is you. No more excuses as to why I can’t be happy. It’s all on me. Not sweating the small stuff not only works, but has helped me maintain inner peace. Inner peace can be attained as soon as you stop letting the outer chaos dictate how you feel about the world around you. I see silver linings, half full glasses, and positive outcomes at every turn. I no longer give an audience to negativity. I am awesome! My friends are awesome!

Alise

In 2009 I have learned that it is okay to cry. I have ranted on this blog and on my other about people allowing me to just have my emotions... Well, at this point I don't care what others say and won't address that anymore, because if I need to cry, I will. If I need to laugh at inappropriate times, I will. If I need to withdraw and be to myself, I will. If I need to step on stage just to get attention, I will. If I need to write sad poems that make very little sense, I will.

My other lesson I learned is to accept genuine and heartfelt help and to learn to ask for it. Independence and all is a wonderful thing, but sometimes a good soldier's best strategy is to throw up the white flag and admit defeat. Then launch a sneak attack when the enemy least expects it. BAM!

Things that we have learned in ‘09 that we will leave behind:

Eysqueen
One person’s misery doesn’t have to be shared by me. I can be understanding from afar. Winter weight, holla! Excuses for underachievement, I’m so much better than the limits I set upon myself, so I’m leaving self imposed limits behind. I can only be as happy or as miserable in my relationship as I am as happy or as miserable with myself. So I’m not going to expect my relationship to make me happy if I can’t make me happy first. Leaving the responsibility for my self care off of other’s shoulders.

Alise
I will leave behind a couple-few "friends". I will also leave doubt, anxiety, and fear in 2009. Those are the only 3 things that have held me back, wait there are 4 things that held me back. Me.

Seuss Deez: Horton Hears a Who!

OI actually wasn't familiar with this book as a child. In fact I didn't know the plot until yesterday. true story. I went online and read the book and discovered it was a profound little tale. Here is a synposis I swiped form wikipedia if you haven't read it either:

The book tells the story of Horton the Elephant who, on the fifteenth of May in the Jungle of Nool, hears a small speck of dust talking to him. It turns out the speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called ‘‘Who-ville’’, inhabited by microscopic-sized inhabitants known as Whos and led by a character known as the mayor.

The Whos ask Horton (who, though he cannot see them, is able to hear them quite well) to protect them from harm, which Horton happily agrees to do, proclaiming throughout the book that ‘‘even though you can’t see or hear them at all, a person’s a person, no matter how small’’. In doing so he is ridiculed and forced into a cage by the other animals in the jungle for believing in something that they are unable to see or hear. His chief tormentors are Vlad Vladikoff, the Wickersham Brothers and the Sour Kangaroo. Horton tells the Whos that, lest they end up being boiled in ‘‘Beezelnut Oil’’, they need to make themselves heard to the other animals. The Whos finally accomplish this by ensuring that all members of their society play their part. In the end it is a ‘‘very small shirker named JoJo’’ whose final addition to the volume creates enough lift for the jungle to hear the sound, thus reinforcing the moral of ‘‘a person’s a person, no matter how small’’.

Now convinced of the Whos’ existence, Horton’s neighbors vow to help him protect the tiny community.

So now that we have all that out the way, here is our conversation... (don't you miss our IM's?)

T 2U (12:43 PM): the answers to the problems addressed in the state of the black union can be found in horton hears a who
T 2U (12:43 PM): thank you very much

Alise (12:45 PM): like?
Alise (12:45 PM): (i haven't read it, so i don't know)

T 2U (12:47 PM): i haven't either but i'm using my creative license to make the shit fit

Alise (12:47 PM): nice!

You ever meet that person who talks loudly and says nothing? I know plenty. They usually hide behind the excuse of, "that's just my personality," or "don't change/judge me." Yes, of course we've talked about this type of person a million times, but I am beating this dead horse for a reason. This type of person is the downfall of our community and country as a whole. Why, you ask. These are the people who talk so loudly that the "whos" (us, the idealists) are never heard by the "Hortons" ("them", the semi-genuine politicians, the altruistic managers, etc.).

T 2U (2:28 PM): just some "whos" trying to make a peep in a crowded club straining vocals against the rants of the fear mongering populous trying to overcompensate for their ever diminishing importance in life in general
T 2U (2:28 PM): they have no purpose but must be heard
T 2U (2:28 PM): i need an open mic!!

Alise (2:29 PM): nice
Alise (2:29 PM): that's going in the post

The loud idiot is not only annoying and distracting, but are never flexible and never reasonable. (Read: Don't judge/change me) These are the ones that proclaim a government attempting to provide healthcare as socialist without knowing the definition of socialist. As a matter of fact they don't know what capitalist, democracy, or the 3 branches of our government. Yet, will be the same one on camera next week saying why is the government not addressing our healthcare needs. Yes, the loud idiot is also a hypocrite, but are too loud and busy talking that they fail to realize it. They always choose the Public opinion du jour from the menu. uncool.

Right now I just pray that our Horton hears us before us dust particles get sucked up by the machine vacuum .

Good readers, who or what else do you think is so loud or distracting that causes us Whos not to be heard?

Flashback is action that interrupts to show an event that happened at an earlier time which is necessary to better understanding.

tiha says:
We all have our foundations, our parents instilled morals and ethics, or the church did it, or your neighborhood posse. When I was a teenager I was truly blessed to have my ears kissed by conscious rap. It was funky enough to irritate my parents, but grooving enough to make James Brown proud to have his beats sampled. I mean 90s rap filled my teenaged life with meaning, I wanted to stand up for my people. I wanted to go dig Brenda’s baby out of the dumpster and make her take it to the hospital.

It made me think Ice Cube was some kind of seer of the people whenever he predicted the next west coast revolt. It made me want to hurry up and be able to vote so I could help fight the power. It made me wanted to illicit change in the way the police treated brown folks. It made me believe that we could accomplish anything if we all stood together, and it made me believe in us as a people. We were united through our angst.

90s conscious rap was the soundtrack to the revolution-that still hasn’t come. I listen to 90’s rap now, and its all still relevant, same struggles, same issues, just a different decade. Really people? We don’t have to reach that far back in our history to know what’s going on. So I’m throwing up my fist, I have on my Tims, I’m back in the alley on a cold Boston night plotting for change, giving my respect to the messages these artists tried to pass on to us. I hear you guys, I swear I do!

alise chimes in:

One way the spirit of the 90's conscious rap is living on is through Spoken Word.

Many of the poets and poetry fans I run into have that spirit of revolution, change, and self awareness. We hope that through each word, poem, anecdote, or story that is told, it becomes catalyst for some young warrior or leader who just needed a push. I hope that beautiful soul saves us all.

peace.

Cubicle Crusaders Poetry Greatest Hits

Since we started this week off with a poem, I thought I would share some of my favorite poems Tiha and I have written over the course of our blog. Let us know what you think!

from Poetry Wednesday's: MEH (my response to the debate last night)
-Tiha

Meditating Endlessly about my Horizons
because the view at ground level sucks
I’m too close to the manmade earth
which is made up mainly of mistakes and rocks.
I’ve taken to tugging on my hair
to relieve all this anxiety I have built up inside
in school I believe they said it’s a disorder
anxious obsession that I know is felt countrywide.
I have no sense of control
but what I sense isn’t too good
in fact its keeping me with bald patches on my head
and my eyes rolled up looking like a crackhead in the hood.
If drugs were an option
I’d be smacking my arm right now
but my youth has already taught me
that short term is not an option, not for me anyhow.
So I keep my eyes on the horizon
my mind floating amongst the clouds
keeping my dreams alive and safe
and protecting my goals underground.

Poetry Wednesday - A sexy mind is a terrible thing to waste...
-Tiha

i swear i'm not great in my own mind,
my own mind just happens to be great
my brain is soooooo sexy
all gray and goowey
oozing sense and sensibility
sensual thoughts verbalized as creative ideas
genius bottled as grey matter
matter of factly packaged for success

So time for me
... to abandon the vicious cycles
.....and running in circles...
I am gonna run ....
in some new shapes,
ellipses,
rhombuses*....
no. fuck that.
I am multidimensional
I'll run, walk, and glide in 3D,
run in dodecahedron
excel in this sphere....
yup.
no more running in circles
...that always ends in a cube....

and our first joint poem we ever did, and probably our fave!
from Yet To Be Realized Potential of a Creative Class Superstar....

There are the bullies and the bullied
There are the popular and the socially awkward
There are the Bes and the wanna-bes
Some time after high school class culture meets real world life stressors meets survival of the fittest the lines blur and roles change.
The bullies become leaders or dictators (depending on the country)
The popular become entertainers
The Bes are being happy
And the bullied, socially awkward and wanna-bes are in management.
Welcome to cube life!

I think, therefore I am......an outcast in this cubicle nation
Weirdo among automatons scared of recreation...
Not satisfied with status quo and placation
But it is I who is the skeleton key to workplace rejuvenation...
Yet when I cross the cubicle borders I am faced with condemnation,
New ideas faced with scoffs and irritation....

Even complacency is complaining about the tedium of my cubicle existence.
Going against it's very nature, it has planned a mental revolt.
It kidnapped serenity and left a note saying:
give us fulfillment! give us challenge! give us free! or the bitch gets it...

I am a wolf in business casual attire
Ribs are touching..... so I am stalking, staking, slithering, & scoping....
Shuffling around in sensible shoes searching and salivating for something worth sinking my fangs in
Trying futilely to fit in with the flock.....
A time bomb with teeth....
tick.... tock....

Now that I’ve entered the 30+ realm of hotness and uber sexiness, I’m in awe of the level of understanding I have. I mean, I’m not saying I know it all, not even close, but I now understand so much better all of the things I’ve come to know during my 3 decades on this flighty planet. I understand things about myself and the way the world works. This understanding has rendered me calm amidst the man made storms, even that non man made ones. My faith in things intangible has strengthened. Me no worry over things I can’t control.

Specifically artistically I am so much more free. I mean people have told me, actually they haven’t really, I’ve told myself that I am free to do what I want, but now I believe me. And this newfound freeness has my mind boggled, but in a good way. I’m out on the edge of the cliff, and I don’t care…will I fall…I don’t care…will I come back…I don’t care…and it feels good…to only care about what I love…

sounds like the start of a poem….

{naturally alise steps in} well i think i'll write one of many that is all up in my spirit....

[so tiha: sometimes it's okay to jump..... use your wings...]
I was tagged by Miss Jia over at missjia.com to write 6 Fun Facts aboust myself, but I thought it would be more fun to do fun facts about myself and Tiha... here goes, in IM form of course :)

Alise (11:50 AM): Cubicle Crusader fun fact #1: Alise & Tiha have been IM BFF's for over 6 years, and even when we lived in walking distance from each other we still IM'ed more than we saw or called each other.
T 2U (11:50 AM): this is very true
Alise (11:51 AM): worked out nicely bc i am soooooooooooo not a phone person
Alise (11:51 AM): i hate talking on the phone
T 2U (11:52 AM): fun fact #2, we went to school together
Alise (11:52 AM): yup yup, but add that we never talked to each other
Alise (11:52 AM): lol
Alise (11:52 AM): you were scary, lol
T 2U (11:55 AM): ha!
T 2U (11:55 AM): lol
Alise (11:56 AM): #3: Cubicle Crusaders was started by accident bc of the daily work bitch sessions and a collaboration poem about Wolves in business casual attire
T 2U (11:57 AM): yes!
T 2U (11:57 AM): a happy accident
Alise (12:02 PM): yea 3 down
T 2U (12:14 PM): do we have any more fun facts?
T 2U (12:14 PM): lol
T 2U (12:14 PM): i think we've told them everything else
Alise (12:14 PM): ok!
Alise (12:15 PM): Fun Fact #4: Tiha is Alise's biggest fan. We used to go to a poetry open mic every Wednesday and Tiha would always give me a standing ovation and then we would ignore all the other performers the rest of the night.
Alise (12:15 PM): lol
T 2U (12:16 PM): LOL! so true
T 2U (12:16 PM): we sure would
Alise (12:16 PM): except for Marc marcel, lol
T 2U (12:16 PM): of course
Alise (12:16 PM): that day we were mesmerized
Alise (12:17 PM): i may post this up today if we think of 2 more
T 2U (12:17 PM): ok hmmm
T 2U (12:18 PM): #5 we watch cartoons
T 2U (12:18 PM): like religiously
T 2U (12:18 PM): adult swim
Alise (12:19 PM): yes!
Alise (12:19 PM): one more
Alise (12:20 PM): #6 I harrassed you the whole time you were in NC to go natural, and soon as you moved you did it
T 2U (12:20 PM): i had to get away from an ex who had the same do
T 2U (12:20 PM): lol
T 2U (12:20 PM): dang this is hard
T 2U (12:21 PM): fun facts, hmmmm
Alise (12:21 PM): we only needed 6
Alise (12:21 PM): we got em
T 2U (12:21 PM): oh ok

Cube Affirmations

2Pac said ,"Keep Ya Head Up", Barack says, "Yes We Can", my mama says, "Girl, get out my face and go do something" (not kidding), and my late great granny said "You can do anything you want to , baby" (the country drawl made it so cute), and Simon says , "Take 2 steps forward", so what do we say to keep us going and inspired?

Jadakiss feat. Eve & Style P,"We Gon' Make It"

[ramble] *at Tiha's request 3 of them must be "Yes We Can", she is special, but special people need love too. And you can probably tell which ones are my affirmations because I am silly and don't know how to really be any other way, nor do I want to.... [/ramble]

Cube Affirmations
1. Achievement is not an option.
2.Yes we can!
3. The cube is temporary, soon my office will be a fabuous sphere..... the world.
4. Murder is illegal, so I must get out of Corporate America, because a jail cell is the worst kind of cube.
5.Yes we can !
6. The results of every decision acts as a compass to guide our next decisions, so learn (from your achievements and mistakes), build(a new plan), and do(it).
7. Look back long enough to change lanes as you move forward.
8.Si se puede !
9. There is not shame in humble beginnings, just closed minds (be open to expand, but true to self to stay real).
10. My president is black, there is nothing I can't do!

What are some of your affirmations, work or otherwise?

Okay, Miss Tiha went and chopped all of her hair off, too.... and this conversation and poem were born:

10/14/08
T 2U :i have a swirling vent about hair
T 2U : about other people's attachment to my hair
Alise: ditto
Alise: "I am not my hair "
Alise: "But I am this foot up yo' ass "
Alise: that is my poem
Alise: thank you, thank you very much
Alise: jackson height's own Randy Watson
Alise: that girl is good!
T 2U : i so didnt get that song until now
T 2U : i'm going to etch out a few bars on it, cuz i gotta get this off my chest
Alise: word, i got some bars too
Alise: someone told me yesterday i could wear my hair short because I had "good hair", i almost vomitted on that person
T 2U : grittting teeth
Alise: dont do that, bc u r your teeth
T 2U : ha!
T 2U : ok aol radio decides it wants to play "i am not my hair"
T 2U : how cute
Alise: cosmic signals and shit

*this rant in no way signifies that we are some angry black women with conspiracy dreams...we were born angry dreamers.
We wrote a poem about it, wanna hear it, here it go.....

Ode to the short natural
I got face baby
but better than that
I got personality
I got a shine
to blind
your mind
to take away
offense and disgrace
I got words
for you birds
to carry to your nest
I got thoughts
tied into knots
for all those who forgot
I got confidence
in everything I do
and confidently I say to you
I got no hair for you to stare
but I got face
look at my grace
I got personality
that makes me gritty
I got shine
to illuminate your mind
and I got words
so now you’ve heard
and by the way I am not my hair
But I am this foot up yo' ass
I am no cookie cutter
But I will cut ya
Just like I cut my hair
So mind ya business,
I'm cute dammit.
-Tiha & Naturally Alise 2008

*Before, After, and "after-after" (perm, locs, short natural) .... all cute, all the same silly b*tch, all different states of hair, nuff said.......

Poetry (Kinda) Wednesday: Cube Flu

Negrobola. Foot in Hoof & Mouth Disease. KIDS. Cube Flu. Something will get ya.
You ever say something like, "This job makes me sick!"? Well, I am beginning to think that my job really does make me ill, I know I am the illest chick on the planet, but I'm not talking about that kind of ill, (See, the job has me delusional!) This is a conversation that we are trying to evolve into a poem or something, so you can see the process (or lack thereof) that we go through to write our ridiculous poems and blogs. So here ya go party people!

Alise: You got any sick days left?
T 2U: naw, you know we stay sick
T 2U: and currently i'm sick again, and my coworker say she got the same symptoms i got
T 2U: the cube bug

Alise: that is about as deadly as the daycare bug
T 2U: lol
T 2U: nasuea-from seeing stupid shit
T 2U: headache-from processing stupid shit
T 2U: chills/fever- from budget cutting the thermastat

Alise: carpal tunnel from imaginary & real bitch slapping
T 2U: lol
T 2U: sounds bout right

Alise: no, your headache came from banging your head against the wall and mine from hitting the ceiling at my job
T 2U: ha!! Cube Flu!
Alise:that would make a good poem....
T2U: word!
Alise: ...we need some more symptoms
T 2U: coughing undigested BS
T 2U: alergic to BS- sneezing
T 2U: vertigo- seperation of logic and common sense from actions has created a topsy-turvy world

Alise: i like the vertigo line, that's hot!
Alise: Ignorance makes me itch
T 2U: rashes and shit
Alise: hee hee....

Yeah, we got issues, we know this, but y'all reading it so y'all are just as crazy! Thanks for reading, we appreciate it!

Poetry Wednesday: Box Deez

T 2U: today is colab poetry day isnt it?
Alise: yes
T 2U: yay and we did it
T 2U: *clapping like a 3 year old
Alise: blog coming shortly
T 2U: *doing the cabbage patch

How do I think outside of the box
While trapped in a box
Boxing with stupidity
Bobbing and weaving
Weaving a web of complacency
Webs trapping my creativity
(Imaginanation furloughed)
creativity compartamentalized to fit what has always been done
...and as long as you do what has always been done,
You'll always Meet expectation
To Exceed expectaion you may have to work as a team,
but team work means to talk to one another
and you know there is no "socializing" on company time
so teamworks flies out the window,
with your creativity of course,
and individualism is rewarded by fake ass certificates of achievement
always achieving what is expected of you
and meeting expectation

So Box deez....... lol

Poetry Wednesday - "Where's the Love?"

"Ni**a, Respect the game. That should be it, what you eat don't make me sh*t. Where's the love?"
-Jay-Z

Just another collabo brought to you by the good people at CCIR....... (poems every Wednesday)

Forehead flat from banging it against the wall in the face of misconstrued thoughts and sentiments.
“you bitches just don’t understand!”
Screamed from the mouth of an adult teenager
Becoming accustomed to the angst that is her life.
Labeled as observer
Only participating in her mind
Talents coveted
Potential hidden
Recognition recognizing the prize that is her

But the masses
The lemmings
Are oblivious to what IT is that she IS that she has
And who she’s always been.
Tortured by her greatness,
But grateful to have something that makes her special
And if the result is miscomprehension
Then she’ll take hers on the side, next to her genius,
Because the only applause she really needs comes from within.

And when she clap she stands even taller
Because her brillance requires ovations
And your unappreciation does not lead to her depreciation
She is not deterred by your attempted dream defecation
(your sh*t does not affect her)

Alise: oh ok, random quote* from a blog that had me in stitches: "I think fuckery might have evolved into an airborne virus, and it is messing with everyone’s psyche."
T 2U: group psychosis?
T 2U: lol
T 2U: the fuckery virus

Alise: precisely!
Alise: Negrobola
Alise: It has an 18 year incubation period
Alise: whatever that means, it just sounded fancy... lol
T 2U: that means your a full blown idiot just in time to be old enough to vote
Alise: And they will never cure Negrobola, just find a way to let you live with it
Alise: bc as C. Rock says 'the money's in the medicine'
Alise: Sometimes I feel like we are a Tuskegee experiment

T 2U: do you think blogging will kill myspace?
Alise: naw, myspace is like
T 2U: not a pretty comparison
T 2U: lol
T 2U: roaches on my space

Alise: no, myspace is the roach
Alise: surviving nuclear wars and shit
Alise: and also is dirty and annoying and shit
Alise: thrives off of filth and fuckery
Alise: I think it is a carrier of the Negrobola virus
T 2U: i have not been to this seedy side of myspace**, that u describe so vividly
T 2U: lol

Alise: oh you lucky sheltered one
Alise: Well it is on the corner of Alston & Angier Ave***.
T 2U: hA!

A pimp named Alice

Alise: i think i sprained my wrist or something
Alise: it hurts like a bitch
Alise: maybe it is carpal tunnel ????
Alise: i dont know the symptoms of it though

T 2U: what the heck were you doing? break dancing?

Alise: naw, just smacking hos
Alise: you know, the usual

T 2U: ahh yes, the usual

(Another Tiha/Alise Colabo for dat ass......)

Hypocritical US always on their high white horse
Pointing syringes, I mean fingers and aiming nuclear weapons
Government dope feinds
With no righteous vein in sight
Do anything for a dollar
Just to squander
.....on instant gratification
...and long term suffering
12-steps aint working
The United States of Arrogance can't get past step 1
Admitting the problem
And their pride cushions all their faults
But even they can't make the destruction any more comfy
......Wittless leadership pacified by heroin dreams

Alise: ...Just say no
T 2U: just say no to the american dream!
Alise: I like that....

(She might kill me for posting this one, but it is hillarious)

Link to the article we were discussing: Obama's Sidekick Pick

Alise: i have been slacking on my root pimpin
Alise: so no, lol
T 2U: it was horrible!
T 2U: the quality of the person who wrote it.....
T 2U: ugh

Alise: i definitely have to check it out so i can heckle
T 2U: or maybe i'm just on Obamas nuts so hard that anyone doubting his intellegence pisses me off
T 2U: i only read the first 2 paragraphs

Alise: oh wow
T 2U: tmi?
T 2U: lol

Alise: naw, that u only read the first 2 paragraphs
Alise: tmi doesnt really exist in my world
T 2U: oh lol

T 2U: i prematurly ejaculated my judgement all over that article

Me and my partner in (C)rhyme wrote a poem about a month back and I forgot to post it.... it is dedicated to all the Cubicle Crusaders out there....

Not satisfied with status quo and placation
But it is I who is the skeleton key to workplace rejuvenation...
Yet when I cross the cubicle borders I am faced with condemnation,
New ideas faced with scoffs and irritation....

Even complacency is complaining about the tedium of my cubicle existance.

A time bomb with teeth....
tick.... tock....
