Today I was going to save Tiha from the zombies because I am super and I am a hero, but I got sidetracked, she'll be alright for a second, she's resourceful. You know I have a one-track mind. In fact, you should get your white water raft and sail on my stream of consciousness, your life jacket will be your open mind. (I'm a poet, shoot me) Well, I just got finished reading a book called "The Lovely Bones", by Alice Sebold that was recommended to me by the fabulous Suga, and I am so glad that I was steered in this book's direction. This is the synopsis of the book from Amazon.com:
When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen.
In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets.
With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief, her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor and begin the difficult process of healing.
In the hands of a brilliant novelist, the author narrates the THE LOVELY BONES through the eyes of her winning young heroine. This story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.
One thing that stood out to me in this book is that the main character Susie, who is in heaven for the majority of the book, describes how each person has their own heaven. Their heaven is based on what they love and find pleasurable or comforting. So this leads me to a question for you guys: What would your heaven be like, what would be playing, would would be your surroundings, what person that passed away from your life would you want to see first?
~discuss~ (I'll paint you a picture of my heaven in the comments... i promise....)

My heaven is a hip-hop & poetry wonderland where I am reunited with my childhood best friend Robin and my grandma, we will eat my grandfather's sweet potato pies and and eat lots of cookie dough ice cream. Everyone will talk in their own poetry meter and verse, every utterance is a lyric that would make the greatest poet proud. Yep, that's my heaven.... :)
its funny because when i thought about my heave, i immediately thought about what I'd already created here on earth. my mind went directly to my heaven on earth, so i'll describe that. my heaven on earth is my apartment. i have paintings everywhere, they keep having babies and multipling. I'm surrounded by art, mine and my favorite artists. i'm surrounded by art tools, video gaming systems, my bicycle, my fridge. and i'm pretty doggone happy in my apt. yeah thats my heaven, art, video games, and food. :)
My heaven is a two part-er.
Version one: My heaven would be my childhood kitchen with my Mom making meatballs, singing along to Nina Simone or Lou Rawls. I'd have my pastels and sketch pad or a pen and notebook with me under the kitchen table, and JoJo the bassett hound would be sleeping by my feet.
Version two: My heaven would be my yard in early summer. Picnic table set, grill fired up with Marc, Eli and all of my friends celebrating togetherness, family and friendship. Mom would be there and so would my Uncle Leonard and Aunt Helen and Aunt Leota, all playing penny poker.
Ooh. This is a big one, and that's one reason it's taking me 'til now to get on it.
I could go into all the religious imagery and all the implications of what heaven is and stuff, as I'm into that, but we're not on that trip here.
So what I imagine Heaven to include, among other things, for me at least, is music galore...like every musical instrument that I always dreamed of is there at my fingertips, I never get tired and I never have to eat, so I can create masterpiece after masterpiece uninterrupted...everything sounds exactly as I hear it in my head, because my mind is no longer clouded up (and my memory actually works right), and I get to jam with Billy Preston and Elvis and Roger Troutman and Glen Goins and all the other amazing artists that are there, and they are doing the same thing - just creating beautiful music.
And none of the electric instruments need power, because it's Heaven, and everything always works, and I get everything right on the first take. And I never forget to hit "record", because there are angels helping me engineer everything.
"Every song's a favorite song
And mics don't feed back
All the reviewers say you need to go and see that...
And everybody claps cause everybody is pleased,
Then they all take the stage and start performing for me, like ha ha ha ha ha"
I had to go there. :-)
Thanks for the shout out. I loved that book!
My heaven would be filled with my grandma and her cooking. And plenty of talks with God and Jesus, but instead of talking, we would sing. Sounds crazy, but I love to sing (and good at it) but too scared to do it in public, so in my heaven, all of my shyness would disappear into thin air
