The value of education from a HBCU=PRICELESS

*There actually were quite a few similarities of the good things from "A Different World" at real HBCU's*

For those of you who have never been to a HBCU I’d like to take you on a campus visit. I’m going to let you in on a few secrets of what makes an education from a HBCU so great and precious. Maybe this will help you to understand why graduates (and almost graduates) from HBCUs go just about crazy when they see another alum. Maybe you’ll stop hating (for all those hates) on something you know absolutely nothing about and have never experienced. This post doesn’t come out of a place of darkness, this isn’t a post for the haters. This post comes from the oh so many times I credit my HBCU experience for getting me through a tough situation, or for giving me the strength wisdom and guidance to preserver. I love my dang school and as I type I’m trying so hard not to throw up our sign or shout from the top of my lungs our various chants. I wont start humming the song for the band. I wont start doing the chants from the cheerleaders. I wont even mention my school colors…nope, not gonna do it, because my love and education from my school goes soooo much deeper than games, colors, and parties.

My HBCU taught me that nothing, absolutely NOTHING is handed to you. If you want something, you have to get up off your lazy, momma will take care of it, spoiled ass and fend for yourself. If you want financial aid, you have to fill out the forms CORRECTLY, then wait in a line, a long line to turn them in. Put on some comfy shoes and bring a book (prepared me for the line to vote, going to the DMV, and getting into a club. I’m so used to it from undergrad that I don’t bother to complain, I already know complaining don’t solve shit).
I’ve learned that I AM MY OWN RESPONSIBILITY. That leaving paperwork and such up to the people in the offices is an easy way to get your stuff lost. The people who process paperwork are there to do one thing, process. They don’t care that you didn’t know which form to fill out, they don’t care that you didn’t know when the deadline was, they don’t care about you. They don’t get paid to care about you and your education. That is your job. This has made me a highly organized person who duplicates all of her important documents and is not too good to walk her paperwork form department to department just to make sure it gets to the right people.

Dealing with paperwork and financial aid has taught me important social skills. I’ve had to learn how to talk to people, from admin to professors. If you want something done quickly, you’ve got to know how to talk to people. Someone is more likely to go the extra mile for you if you genuinely say please and thank you with a smile, than if you have an attitude and think someone owes you something. If you look like you’ve put some effort into what you are doing, its amazing how open people are to helping you. Baked goods and chocolate go far too ;)

Going to a HBCU was such a departure from going to my all white high school. For once I wasn’t the only one in class. For once it wasn’t assumed that I was not as smart just because I was black. There was no place for those kinds of thoughts, imagined or real. We were all black and we were all there for the same thing. I felt so comfortable knowing that I was being looked at for what I said as a person, not as the black girl. We were free to talk about “white folks” and the janky shit they do without offending anyone because it was just us. Everything was culturally sensitive. I began to feel good for being smart, I spoke up more in class, I even sat in front of the class. By junior year I was co teaching with my professors. I loved school, and I never thought that would happen.

We were humble at my HBCU, I mean we didn’t have much, nothing was a luxury so we all really bonded over chicken Wednesdays and fish Fridays. If someone was going to the store, because only maybe 2 people on the hall had a car, people would get something for you. People would share what they had. Folks reached out to you. For those of us with no car, we made up stuff to do together, on campus, we worked with what we had and had a good time! Campus parties were the bomb! We didn’t have to leave just to have a good time. Sneaking up into the boys dorm wasn’t always about having sex. We actually went up in there, as a group, to hang, to really hang and chill as friends with no cars do. My HBCU taught me how to value what I had and make something great out of very little. And I was never afraid of the guys on campus. Most of them were really cool and looked out for us. If they saw us outside of campus at a club, they’d make sure we were ok, that we had a ride home. Because they knew we were fellow Eagles (oops how’d that get in there?).

My HBCU showed me what it looks like when a black community works together. And that’s something no one ever wants people to see. Through the good times and the bad, my HBCU was my black community that I could count on. And it wasn’t just blacks that went there. Every kind of person went there, although we were the majority. And of course were weren’t racist or discriminatory. We didn’t look at other folks like they were “other” they were Crystal and Cliff and Jason. They were students who happened to be white and Chinese and Hispanic. Racial harmony on a HBCU, what a concept.

These are all the reasons why I get so offended when people talk negatively about my kind of school. Even the people who went there who talk mess, I want to punch them too, because there was so much to get out of an experience of going to a HBCU. If you missed it, you missed something the lottery or the highest paying job could NEVER give you.

My hat goes off to my alma mater and all of the HBCUs who keep producing such excellent professionals. cheers!

1. When I have on my headphones and people try to talk to me. If I don’t have the common courtesy to take them off when you approach me, I probably don’t have the desire to hear anything you have to say.

2. When I’m really concentrating hard at work to design and people are standing around having loud, long conversations. Genius at work, shut the f* up! And all they’re talking about is how stupid they are because they couldn’t figure something out and how they had to come to my section to begin with.

3. When ignorant a** people try to sound intellectual and smart. At no time is it ok to refer to a deadly disease as “The Aids”. Especially if you used to be a healthcare provider.

And this concludes my rendition of what really grinds my gears*. Thank you.

I decided to have a little fun today. I imagined what the help wanted ad for my job would look like if it told the truth .... here is what it would say:

Those with acute mental illness and illicit drug use will get first consideration. EOE.

What would your job's truthful want-ad say?
(I can't wait to see Tiha's and you guys ads, come participate, it's fun and everybody cool is doing it *wink*)

[Tiha Update]

Wanted: a backwards thinker who is efficient in
inefficiency. Candidate must have a worker bee/drone mentality, have the inability to make decisions on their own, but be able to make decisions in the place of leaderless leadership. Candidate should never question authority and be prepared to take the blame and all of the repercussions when things go wrong. Bye y'all!!!!!!!

Howdy Cubers and Cubernistas! Well after a pretty sucky day at work, and a sucky/sad day in real life yesterday, I decided I will kick off Thursday with inspiration and coolness. Because yesterday I was really on a Cypress Hill (...bc I Could Just Kill a Man) type of kick towards then end of the day. So, in the interest of not getting 25 to life, I figured I need something to lift my spirits. Then I thought of something I read in the Gettogetha blog a little while ago about making inspiration boards. Click the link, they are pretty cool. I think this is a great idea, and it will accomplish a few things:

  • Decorate the Cube cell and keep me out of a real cell.

  • Project! (I love projects as long as it's not of the housing variety)

  • Constant reminder of what I am trying to accomplish...

  • Since I am a visual alien/person/learner it will hit me harder than just saying my dreams out loud.

Here are a few pictures and things i may add to my board:

*Marc Marcel, one of the most hustling, getting it poet/spoken word artists out there, I really look up to this cat.*

*I want to at some point teach English*

*I want to hit mad stages, word!*

*I already am! (Had to plug myself a little bit)*

*I want to write lots of books. edit lots of books, read lots of books, be in books, you get the picture....* :)

*I told y'all before this is my dream office*

Y'all get the picture? I am going to make an acual board over the weekend and take pictures for you guys to see. So family, (that's how I think of our readers)what would go on your inspiration board?

This season on top model they had their first transgender contestant. I was really rooting for this girl, I thought she was pretty and she was well read on what it takes to be a model. Her downfall? She ended up trying so hard to fit in that she faded out into the background. What made her so special to begin with, the reason Top Model called her was that she stood out in the crowd. She had that thing that grabbed your attention and held it. Isis was by no means your average girl, and that made her special.Moral alert: be who you are, no matter what others think you should be. What makes us special makes us shine, and its our shine that gives us purpose and meaning in this life. Yeah, Isis was in a cube, just like the rest of us, but hopefully she’ll break free and be who she was meant to be, just like the rest of us.

*Coincidence? I think not.....Cue the Twilight Zone music....*

So check this out, I swear the universe* talks to us. What language does it speak you nosy people may ask? It speaks Mandarin in coincidences. I know, you are wondering what the heck is this chick talking about, has the cubicle totally turned her into a raving lunatic, well it has but right now I am semi-lucid . Over the past few months things that I brushed off as coincidence, after further analysis, I have realized were so much more. Sometimes jsut small things, sometimes much greater. for example (of a small thing), My partner in (c)rhyme and I had the following IM chat:

T2U: since we are all inspired and sh*t, shouldnt the colors on the blog be a little more inspirational?
Alise: you have a point there grashopper
And about an hour later I go to a blog by The Comeback Girl entitled: "Feng Shui: “Let The Sunshine In”", and in one paragraph of her blog she discusses a little blog feng shui:

There’s even been one or two blogs that I’d like to Feng Shui with just a little light. The ones with the all black background......

Now she was by no means talking about me, but it struck a nerve because I was JUST talking about that. (And it will be a fun project for Tiha and I, we love projects**) And that sort of thing has been happening over and over again lately. Each time it happens it is related to something inspirational, related to my art, or related to escaping this cubicle... that's a trifecta I 'm not mad about at all. Nah mean? And speaking of sunshine here is a video about sunshine and sh*t...lol (I'm taking babysteps, don't judge me...):

"Sunshine" by Coko of SWV

*insert God, conscience, little people riding unicorns, multiple personalities, or whatever speaks to you.
**And by the way, we will be changing up the theme/color/banner of the blog soon, the Cubicle Crusaders are in the lab.... stick around!

Inspire deez....

If it wasn't for prison and other unsavory locales I would be a murderous bitch !!!!

OK, today is a stray away from the inspiration filled Love-fest (gag) we have had all week, let us just say yesterday was the worst day at work release my job that I have had in a loooooooong time. I feel like I am working with children, but that is a hurtful statement to children everywhere (and Marty Mart love da kids) , so lets just say I work with idiots... and not of the savant variety... I gave a supervisor and her department SIMPLE and THOROUGH directions to complete a job for my account that I manage, and not only did they not follow the directions but did the polar opposite of what I directed... So simply put, I handheld a project and they still found a way to fuck it up ROYALLY (well wouldn't it be court-jesterly or T-Painly since they are fools, but I digress), and leading me to extra work such as incident reports, ass kissing my client, and correcting the mistake.... and that cuts into my blogging time, and you know how much that irritates me.... OH, but that is not even the end of the story, then we have a "town hall meeting" style of meeting bullshit thingy this afternoon, where the CEO bestows all this praise to the department and supervisor who are the department that fuc... messed up my job today, so I am just boiling at this point, but because of the nature of the meeting I have to keep the fake perma-grin Colgate commercial action.... The sheep costume is getting more threadbare by the day, I am teetering on insanity and may join in with the lunatics soon... BUT since this week has been all about the music and inspiration I will at least stay true somewhat and I'll give you my: pissed off, irritated, can't take no more, negro please, get a clue, 'bout to go postal (*my company prints, inserts, & sends out mail, lol), ack a fool, gets to steppin', yah trick, cut a bitch, pulling out my hair, smack yo mama playlist..... What are some songs you think would fit in with the theme? I'm always looking for additions and distractions to keep me from jumping off the ledge (even though my job is in a one-story building anyway, lol)... I ain't even religious, but pray for me y'all!

Random Thursday: Drugs are bad mmmkay...

Yeah they are bad, but I am going to share something with y'all, but you can't tell anyone, snitches get stitches and I keep my blade on me at all times, that's how the Bull City gets down....but I digress... Now that I have gotten that out the way back to my confession, I'm an addict, with many drugs of choice, but there is one that be calling me (c) Pookie. And heroin, MD 2020, magic mushrooms, power, Krispy Kreme, and aerosol cans ain't got shit on what I'm hooked on..... wait for it, wait for it.... coffee. Don't you dare judge me, caffeine-heads need your support too, daaaaaang. Y'all don't understand, coffee, or as I affectionately refer to as my Java-lin*, is the only thing gets me over the high level of stupidity I know I will face on the daily.

*'Java-lin', like a javelin, bad joke, I know, I know, I like playing with words and shit... lol

Oh, but when it comes to my drug of choice I am strictly top-shelf. My coworker, who I work with that sits right next to me, and I invested in a coffee maker and bring our own coffee to the office. We do not touch "work swill", you will not get me on some ol' HR-Jim Jones Kool-Aid type of action, I will not fall for it! I know "we" are supposed to like free stuff, but this is where I draw the line. I have standards. However, we do rest the coffee maker on the Cubicle Sabbath - FRIDAY, hallelujah! Praise Santa**! And we commemorate the Sabbath by giving our tithes and offerings and building fund donations to the local Starbucks, Caribou, or some other corporate devil entity, hmmmmmm.... that is kinda like church for real. I need my coffee because I got a million things to do, I gotta go to meetings and stay awake, stare at spreadsheets without falling asleep, and write my blog all while keeping a smile on my face.... and anyway, "It's like a full time job trying not kill ni**as" (Jay-Z). So in closing, I need my drug of choice, management is not ready to see what my withdrawal looks like, it ain't purty, not one little bit!

A Helpful Coffee Hint:

Random Thursday: Krispy Kreme

Do you know what is the greatest day at the cube is???? It is kinda like JuneCubeteenth or OkCubetoberfest.... It is when your slavemaster supervisor brings Krispy Kreme glazed donuts to the idiot-fest production meeting.... so the below is my ode to Krispy Kreme Day through song and poetry... us slaves employees love celebrating scraps! Happy Thursday!
(Shouts to Tanida who I know will thoroughly enjoy this topic, many inside jokes.....)
* Krack Kocaine .... it's like it be calling me......
